The Legacy of the Jeep Wrangler

Although the Jeep Wrangler has only been around since the mid-1980s, its legacy and history go back much further than that. The origins of the Wrangler we all know and love can be traced back to the period between World War I and World War II. Following WWI, the US Army realized the importance of motor vehicles going forward and wanted a reliable vehicle that could go anywhere and easily be worked on in the field. They issued a challenge to American auto manufacturers to produce such a vehicle, and American Bantam came up with a design for a Reconnaissance Car that became the forebear of the Jeep.

Bantam could not produce enough vehicles for the US Army; however, Willys-Overland and Ford stepped in to help with the continued development and production of a vehicle that became the Willys MB and Ford GPW—the original Jeep models. These were the Jeep vehicles produced and deployed overseas during WWII in order to meet the needs of Allied forces. They proved to be an immediate success and wildly popular with soldiers and the US Army. Meeting the needs that had been asked for, these Jeep vehicles were powerful, could go just about anywhere, and were easy to work on thanks to standardized designs and parts.

Following WWII, soldiers came home and quickly realized they missed the Jeeps they had come to rely on day after day. Recognizing there were numerous uses for the Jeep at home, Willys-Overland began development on a model for domestic use, and the first Civilian Jeep, or Jeep CJ, went into production in 1945. Once again, these vehicles were immediately popular with veterans who rejoined their reliable companions from the war, as well as people who saw the practical capabilities of the Jeep CJ for agricultural use and much more.

In the decades that followed, the Jeep brand changed hands several times: first shifting from Willys-Overland to Willys Motors, then Kaiser Jeep in the 1960s. American Motors Corporation acquired the Jeep brand in the 1970s and continued producing the Jeep CJ into the 1980s when they were purchased by Chrysler. In 1986, Chrysler discontinued the CJ and revealed the Jeep Wrangler to the world. While not an official successor to the original, its design and capabilities make it clear that the Wrangler was built to live up to the incredible legacy of the original model that helped the Allies win WWII.

Today, the Jeep Wrangler continues to live up to that legacy with amazing performance and capabilities that are unheard of by most other SUVs out there. Its looks still resemble that original Jeep with its iconic slotted grille and round headlights (though headlight designs have varied over the years). Capability has always remained at the heart of the Jeep Wrangler, and you still find powerful engines and strong suspensions in these vehicles, which are designed to take some serious abuse wherever you go.

Of course, one of the best parts of a Wrangler is your ability to open it up to the outdoors, which is perfect for hitting the trail or driving around town. A fold-down windshield, removable doors, and both soft-top and hard-top options make the Wrangler a fun and exciting drive day after day. You can still find all these features on a new Wrangler, plus the latest technology and comfort features to ensure you always have a great time while driving. All of this comes together to make a new Wrangler a terrific choice, whether you are interested in hitting the trail or want to be a part of its incredible legacy.

Keep a Great Pre-Owned Wrangler on the Road

Of course, you have plenty of other options when you are looking for a Jeep Wrangler for sale, particularly if a pre-owned model could work well for you. As we said, the Wrangler has been around for about 40 years now, which means there are a lot of them out there. While you do not need to go as far back as its introductory year, you can find a used Wrangler from the last few years or even the previous generation that will treat you well. These are vehicles built to be tough and rugged, handling anything the road or trail throws at them, which means you know a used Wrangler in good condition will continue to treat you well for many years to come. It is important you shop with a dealership that offers used models in the best condition possible, which is why we are here to help you find what you are looking for.
